Eight.

It’s hard to believe that eight years ago Ron and I were in the delivery ward swaddling a tiny 6 pound baby girl, who didn’t cry, but purred like a kitten. We sat in the hospital, staring for hours at her perfect little pink face that would forever change our lives.

Krysta, my firstborn, the one that made me mommy, turned eight years old. And so today we celebrated. We celebrated her day. Her birthday. Her birth day. And it was perfect.

Patterned paper butterflies scattered the walls, colorful tissue flowers adorned the ceiling, and a candy buffet with an array of clustered sugared goodness sat nestled on the table in crystal bowls. Our house was full of sweets and chocolate and two dozen children squealing with laughter --enough to give you a sugar high or perhaps just make you high on life.

Children excitedly flooded throughout the house --some danced on the Wii, some played up stairs-- but when it came time for presents, they all came together and watched in anticipation as the birthday girl ripped through wrapping paper and tissue to reveal her birthday surprises.

the aftermath

As everyone congregated to the dining area to sing “Happy Birthday”, my girl’s eyes lit up as we carried in her cake with eight illuminated candles that danced on the top of her pink butterfly cake. Her happiness factor was extremely high! Seeing Krysta so completely overjoyed and loving every moment of her day made me deliriously happy.

These are the moments I live for.

And speaking of cake, Superstar Pastry Design did our cakes for us this year. Don’t they look awesome? And yes, they taste as good as they look! We had some last minute RSVP’s, so Superstar quickly worked with us to make TWO extra coordinating cakes within a less than 24 hour notice! They seriously saved the day.

After the party, Krysta said, “mom, I totally feel like a princess!”

That alone was soul-satisfying!

20 February 2011

The red-headed stepchild with a side of randomness.

This week has been a red-headed-stepchild type of week, as in it’s been out of control and fighting
for my undivided attention.

There were moments when I’d give it my undivided attention -and it was good, for awhile-  but it got so wild and unruly and overbearing, that I had to just throw my hands up and walk away.

Didn’t your mom ever tell you that it’s best to walk away from a fight?

My days are become so insane that if you’re on my facebook or twitter, my status for the next 12 weeks are most likely going to be as followed:

“I’m working on a commission.”

“I’m getting the house ready for the movers.”

Or flat out, “I can’t comment to one status at the moment.”

So for now, before my sanity is ripped to shreds, I’m embracing the small moments from this week
that puts my red-headed-stepchild moments to shame...

Like, my sweet girl is turning eight next week! Now this is no small moment- this is in fact, a VERY BIG MOMENT. An array of paper, tissue, jars, and other crafting supplies are adorning my kitchen table waiting to turn into party decorations.

As you can see, Krysta is ecstatic!

We’re ecstatic!

And speaking of birthdays, Will is still enjoying the aftermath from his. Shaking the bejesus out of the balloons and twisting himself around the string is how he prefers to spend his time. We’re hanging on to every once from his BIG day, deflated balloons and all.

When you have a sunrise to start off your day that looks like this, and a perfectly round moon to grace your black sky at night, how can your moment’s in-between not be full of lovely fantastic happenings?

It really was lovely and fantastic, just as February’s should be- full of bright blue skies, sunshine, and crystal snowflakes that danced among our windowsill. We all enjoyed basking in this incredible weather, especially Louie.

Since it’s still February, and love still fills the air, I want to share with you a few of my favorite moments from Valentine’s Day…

A card from my girl. It says,
Dear Mom and Dad,
You are my Valentine. You are always in my heart. You are the family I always want. I Love You.
Love, Krysta
Krysta’s handmade mailbox filled with sweets and valentines from her classmates.

And a little knickknack from my mom. I hung it on my easel as a daily reminder, especially when I’m getting frustrated with a painting!

Even though we’ve been having beautiful weather, it’s still not warm enough for outdoor spring activities.

What’s a girl to do?

Bring the spring inside, of course! Krysta had a blast blowing bubbles and William had a blast popping them. His eyes were in complete wonder as he watched each glossy bubble bob through the air.

bubbles, compliments from my mom.

Krysta’s school book fair was this week, so of course we had to purchase one or six. She has been reading practically non-stop and saying things like, “Reading is SOOOO much fun! I feel like I’m a teenager!” She truly melts my heart. I love how she’s so eager and excited to learn.

One of her new books is called, The Purple Princess. You know what that means, right?

Her obsession with the color orange has now been replaced with purple!

Since we’re on the topic of replacement and changing things up, we now have a new tradition. Every week between Krysta’s XC Skiing and dance class, we pick up Subway sandwiches for dinner and head to the Arctic Oasis to let William interact with other little kids. Needless to say, this is a win-win.

Krysta says, "look mom, it's a giraffe head." My girl KNOWS what she's talking about!

In a nutshell, these were my small moments from this week.

Now I’m off to get crafty in the party department and stretch Belgian linen canvas…

Happy Weekending.

Worrying does no good.

There’s a saying that goes, “worrying does no good.” So why do we do it? Better yet, why do I do it?

I worry all the time. I worry about the present, the unknown, things I have no control over. I even worry about the past and how it could affect the future. But with worrying, comes caring- they go hand in hand, you know. If you didn’t care, you wouldn’t worry. With that said, I’m okay with worrying because it just means I care… A LOT.

If you’ve read this post, you know where I’m headed- Krysta’s seizure. I have to keep reminding myself that I mustn’t dwell because it’s out of our hands, out of our control. I need to rely on God and to know that he has a plan for us. We’re good people. And yes, sometimes bad things happen to good people, but that’s where faith kicks in. Faith will give you strength and courage and hope beyond your wildest imagination.

We’ve been to the doctor and now we’re waiting on two referrals- one for an EEG, and another to see a neurologist.

Players take your mark; we now begin the waiting game. This is a game that I don’t play very well. I’m a poor sport. I’m impatient. I want answers and I want them now. Waiting is not my forte’.

We’ve all played this game at one point or another, so as my first move, I’m going to stay calm and carry on. I’m going to enjoy the simple carefree life that we’ve strived to create for our little family. I’m going to embrace the moments of calm and brace myself in the moments of chaos.

Until our next hurdle, I’m getting a charge out of the little things, like building snowmen.

Taking delight in hot chocolate after building said snowmen.

Being deliriously happy to see my girl get an academic award along with an outstanding citizen award.

Despite my worries and distress, I refuse to have the whole woe is me attitude. It’s not my style. There’s so much good in our lives, so much to be thankful for; we are blessed indeed.

Happiness is...

Sleepy heads over egg beaters and sausage… and the color red.
