I'm loving.

I was just leaving a friend’s house when it came out of nowhere. A mystical force. A divine intervention. A slice of awesomeness to make my babies and I squeal uncontrollably in sheer joy. It started snowing!

I knew it would end as quickly as it came, so I heightened my senses to its highest capacity and soaked it all in. I deeply inhaled the fresh crisp air until it hit the back on my throat, and then slowly released it. I stood there –square in the middle of my backyard- and looked up into the sky; memorizing the unique cuts of the flakes as they swished and swirled above me from a dusky rose colored backdrop. And when my heart spilled over in floods of complete and udder happiness, I held out my arms and spun around like Jodie Foster in the movie Nell, swaying in the wind style.

It was a nostalgic treat. My very own sliver of Alaska to send me soaring over the moon.

I’m loving it.

{Planning My Two Bambino’s Big Day}

Since the kids birthdays are only two weeks apart --and they’re still young enough to be excited about the party itself, and not being the center of attention-- we’re doing a joint birthday party. While their special day isn’t for another 5 weeks, we’re having a blast throwing around party themes, brainstorming decorations, and food ideas. After changing party themes --at least a dozen times-- we’ve concluded that there’s going to be a lot of little blue birds, toadstools, red capes, and furry brown animals.

Did I mention that we’re making 90% of the decorations ourselves? I’ll post DIY tutorials along with website links after the party.

{Organizing and Getting Rid of the Old}

Our garage has always been a major issue. Losing an entire room plus having a smaller garage, creates a lot of clutter --like mountains of clutter, like Oh my God, are you a hoarder type of clutter. I’m talking about baby items, furniture, and storage bins, on top of regular garage items like tools and garden supplies. Oye. It’s a total mess and a lot to deal with.

And so we’re dealing with it now.

Presenting Project Organize Our Sh*t.

Here is the embarrassing before photo:

Ron and my handsome little man worked hard on building a sturdy shelving unit for my baskets and seasonal storage bins. I also have six boxes of paintings (I’m storing away until they sell or if/when I can get them back into a local art gallery) that are going to get a custom made unit so they can stay in tiptop shape.

I can already feel the load lighten… it’s a work in progress.

But for now, I’m loving my handymen hard at work to make mama’s life run a little smoother.

I mean come on, who wouldn’t love this little mister with his saw? Precious.

*the final photo still to come

{Devilish Grins and Chunky Sweaters}

I adore his little mischievous smiles. I can just eat them up all day. Enough said.

Oh and here’s that grin again.

And again

And again. Gaw, he’s so delicious.

{Unexpected Commissions}

I love unexpected, unplanned, out-of-the-blue commission orders.

Here is my latest pencil drawing.

A lady commissioned me to do a drawing of her two children as a gift to her husband. It’s seriously heart-stretching to know that my work is given as gifts --it’s unique, thoughtful, and from the heart, not to mention it feels so good knowing that someone admires my work enough to give it to someone they love.

{Photography}

It turns out that I found a new passion. A passion that I’m finding myself deeply falling in love with. A passion that I’ve been doing for years, but never thought about making a profit from it.

I’ve always photographed my kids and the little everyday inspirations in my life --sunsets, flowers, a coffee cup-- but it’s truly more than that. I get such a high when I capture the little personalities and the unique qualities of children and babies. It’s heaven.

Here are a few photographs that I took of some sweet friends while we were in Bricktown.

*website coming soon! I haven’t “officially” made a 100% leap into photography…but I’m getting there and hoping to specialize in newborns.

{Ron’s Talent}

My husband builds websites. He’s newest commission is building a site for the Military Museum in Oklahoma City.

While he was sitting down with the director to discuss his expectations, the kids and I took a stroll around the premises.

Krysta had a lot of questions like, what happens to all of the broken planes and military trucks, along with questions about the war and the people who died. She was sad to see all of the unused, broken down vehicles and the names of the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice written on plaques. Krysta truly is a sweet, caring, emotional little girl, which is why we’re having such a hard time breaking the news that daddy will be deploying in a handful of months.

Krysta made a wish that no one had to die. Her heart is big.

Today’s Friday… and that’s something everyone can love!

Look up to the sky and sway like Nell.

Happy Weekend-ing

In the studio.

It’s no secret that I love painting almost as much as I love Girl Scout cookies.

Over the last few months, I’ve been madly painting away in my home art studio. And I couldn’t love it more.

In fact, I’ve been in my studio so much that I may or may not be classified as a hermit. But I’ll never admit it.

Over the years, my eyes have opened so much as an artist. Even within this year itself, my obsession for portraiture has grown leaps and bounds. I’ve harvested my passion children and bridal portraits to the point where I have skin-tone palettes coming out of my ears! I get an internal high when I capture such a precious once-in-a-lifetime moment that can be cherished for generations.

Here are just a few pieces that I’ve been working on:

My past works are now available for purchase (recession prices!) on Etsy and have hit the Etsy Treasuries.

I’m so honored and am in good company with other great artist and crafters!

Check the treasuries out if you get a chance:

I’m now off to work on another art commission while sipping a cup of hot tea! Yippee!

20 February 2011

The red-headed stepchild with a side of randomness.

This week has been a red-headed-stepchild type of week, as in it’s been out of control and fighting
for my undivided attention.

There were moments when I’d give it my undivided attention -and it was good, for awhile-  but it got so wild and unruly and overbearing, that I had to just throw my hands up and walk away.

Didn’t your mom ever tell you that it’s best to walk away from a fight?

My days are become so insane that if you’re on my facebook or twitter, my status for the next 12 weeks are most likely going to be as followed:

“I’m working on a commission.”

“I’m getting the house ready for the movers.”

Or flat out, “I can’t comment to one status at the moment.”

So for now, before my sanity is ripped to shreds, I’m embracing the small moments from this week
that puts my red-headed-stepchild moments to shame...

Like, my sweet girl is turning eight next week! Now this is no small moment- this is in fact, a VERY BIG MOMENT. An array of paper, tissue, jars, and other crafting supplies are adorning my kitchen table waiting to turn into party decorations.

As you can see, Krysta is ecstatic!

We’re ecstatic!

And speaking of birthdays, Will is still enjoying the aftermath from his. Shaking the bejesus out of the balloons and twisting himself around the string is how he prefers to spend his time. We’re hanging on to every once from his BIG day, deflated balloons and all.

When you have a sunrise to start off your day that looks like this, and a perfectly round moon to grace your black sky at night, how can your moment’s in-between not be full of lovely fantastic happenings?

It really was lovely and fantastic, just as February’s should be- full of bright blue skies, sunshine, and crystal snowflakes that danced among our windowsill. We all enjoyed basking in this incredible weather, especially Louie.

Since it’s still February, and love still fills the air, I want to share with you a few of my favorite moments from Valentine’s Day…

A card from my girl. It says,
Dear Mom and Dad,
You are my Valentine. You are always in my heart. You are the family I always want. I Love You.
Love, Krysta
Krysta’s handmade mailbox filled with sweets and valentines from her classmates.

And a little knickknack from my mom. I hung it on my easel as a daily reminder, especially when I’m getting frustrated with a painting!

Even though we’ve been having beautiful weather, it’s still not warm enough for outdoor spring activities.

What’s a girl to do?

Bring the spring inside, of course! Krysta had a blast blowing bubbles and William had a blast popping them. His eyes were in complete wonder as he watched each glossy bubble bob through the air.

bubbles, compliments from my mom.

Krysta’s school book fair was this week, so of course we had to purchase one or six. She has been reading practically non-stop and saying things like, “Reading is SOOOO much fun! I feel like I’m a teenager!” She truly melts my heart. I love how she’s so eager and excited to learn.

One of her new books is called, The Purple Princess. You know what that means, right?

Her obsession with the color orange has now been replaced with purple!

Since we’re on the topic of replacement and changing things up, we now have a new tradition. Every week between Krysta’s XC Skiing and dance class, we pick up Subway sandwiches for dinner and head to the Arctic Oasis to let William interact with other little kids. Needless to say, this is a win-win.

Krysta says, "look mom, it's a giraffe head." My girl KNOWS what she's talking about!

In a nutshell, these were my small moments from this week.

Now I’m off to get crafty in the party department and stretch Belgian linen canvas…

Happy Weekending.

Blizzard Bloghop and a giveaway!

Today, I’m snowing myself in to the Blizzard Bloghop…

Hello, hello!

My name is Emily and this is my little blog, The Writings of an Air Force Wife.

As cliché as it sounds, this blog is my “happy place”. Every week I sit in the same chair, at the same desk, possibly drinking coffee out of the same mug, and I write. I write and I reflect on all things good and positive in my life. Years from now, it’s the good that I want to remember.

I’ve been married to Ron for (almost) nine years and together we have two beautiful children, Krysta (7 yrs) and William (11 months). We’ve endured six deployments and a handful of TDY’s to the sandbox. The Air Force has given us the amazing opportunity to live in the Great State of Alaska for the past four+ years. We’re currently in the process of PCSing this spring- destination unknown.

I’m a professional commissioned artist. I love painting almost as much as I love milk and cookies. When I’m not painting, my other loves include, in no particular order, freshly brewed coffee, Sunday mornings, photographing my babies, salt air, chunky sweaters on a crisp autumn day, good conversations with friends, laughing until my sides hurt, dirty politics, my husband’s taco recipe, and a good book under a thick quilt.

So, come and stay awhile and read about the life we’re creating!

A Beautiful Morning

Maybe it was the extra dose of caffeine or maybe it was this song belting over the car radio, either way I concluded that this morning was fabulous.

While the house was silent and babies slumbered, I woke up nice and slow -6 am nice and slow- to a fresh layer of snow in my everyday Winter Wonderland. Where jewel-toned autumn leaves once danced, the sound of snow now swishes around the windowpanes like flakes of silver glitter. The aroma of fresh coffee beans tip-toed through the air as the coffee pot brewed the perfect cup of coffee. I plugged in the Christmas tree, turned on the Crosley record player, and took a step back. Breathing in long, slow breaths, I stared at the twinkling lights and listened to the crackle of old Christmas records spinning. It was a beautiful morning; a beautiful way to start the day.

Babies slowly emerge from upstairs, silent air is filled with liveliness, and my once was slow morning quickly turned into a scramble of- making breakfast, brushing teeth, breastfeeding babe, packing lunch, changing diapers, and bundling in snow gear from head-to-toe. The wave was building up and I was in swell, pleading to not wipeout.

And it didn’t- it was an all around productive day.

I finished wrapping, boxing, and addressing all of my packages with brown paper and Krysta colored festive little pictures on each one. I addressed, stamped and licked envelopes until my hands cramped and mouth tasted of glue paste. Yes, I’m a little late, but hey, now they’re all now signed, sealed, and delivered.

 And do you see this little beauty? She is justa bubbling over with personality! Courtney was the winner from the Live, Laugh, Love…our way, giveaway! Her custom portrait is now tightly wrapped and boxed; ready to arrive under her Christmas tree!

Courtney, I hope you and your family enjoy this piece for many years to come!

When my little snow bunny came home from school, she had mounds of fresh fluff to frolic around in. Just as Krysta adores the ocean, the same goes for snow. She digs, rolls, and cover’s herself in it- just like beach sand. My girl has an adventurous soul.

I’m off to do busy things and attempt to be productive!

Merry Christmas,
Emily
